Overview

Startup description

I started my project after trying to research the screening phase game that McKinsey used and found little to no useful information online. I had to buy three guides which were quite useless.

After playing the game - McKinsey Solve - (first round screening phase) I decided that it would be more useful for candidates to play something similar to the assessment rather than reading about it

The game offers a business simulation designed to test problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic skills in a competitive environment. Players take on the role of consultants who must analyze complex business scenarios, identify improvement opportunities, and develop effective solutions.

Throughout the game, participants face challenges that simulate real-world issues. With a focus on critical thinking, collaboration, and resource management, this simulator aims to enhance analytical and leadership skills, providing an educational and immersive experience for those looking to sharpen their professional abilities in a dynamic and challenging context enabling candidates to be successful in the screening phase of the process

The game is played through one-time-use licenses

We have an agreement with the leading case interview seller to distribute the licenses with a minimum sale monthly commitment. They are in charge of acquiring users, selling the licenses, collecting the sales and first level support to users in exchange for (confidential)% of the revenue

Key highlights:

Annual revenue: $5200 (last 12 months);

Annual profit: $2400 (last 12 months);

Lifetime revenue: $22500 (since Sep 2022);

Lifetime profit: $10800 (since Sep 2022).

Team

I am in charge for keeping the application live and technical part. The distributor is in charge for advertising, acquiring clients, converting, managing licenses, collecting money, providing first level support to clients...

Tech Stack

The backend is written in Java/Spring hosted in a VPS; frontend in React, hosted in Firebase/S3; mailing service using Mailersend (free tier).

Marketing and growth

All the marketing activities are outsourced to our distributors. You can renegotiate the contract to do some SEO/ads and sell licenses on your own but will require you to (1) build the store, and (2) discuss the minimum purchase commitment.

I have invested nothing on marketing and growth, if you are skilled on those areas you have a lever to implement them by yourself and remove the distributor (and take their cut of the margin).

Revenue and profit

Distributor has committed to a minimum of $(confidential) per month which what has not been sold builds up credit during the following ones. We have quite minimal costs as we can mostly benefit from free tier of the services we use.

Startup assets

We have a database of ~530 paying clients;

Source code;

Domain.

Risks

This business has a notable seasonality (when McKinsey launches the recruitment) and is also subject to the volume of candidates and growth the company plans to hire.

In the last year they had a hiring freeze which impacted on sales.

Summary

Do nothing and collect money business.

If you have knowledge on SEO/ads you have a great opportunity to implement them and sell the licenses directly to clients.

✅ $5,200 in Annual Revenue

✅ 530 customers

✅ Business model: One-time sales

✅ Built with PostgreSQL, React, Firebase

Expenses

$11\/y on domain and $15 on VPS.

Business Model

We sell one-time-use licenses to play a game.

Target Audience

Students, business schools, universities, consulting clubs...

Asking Price Reasoning

We have a minimum selling commitment with the distributor for which you are guaranteed ~$5000/year. You have nothing to do and collect money.

Reason for Selling

Two reasons (1) I am selling as I am moving to a new house and need cash for renovations and (2) If I wanted to increase my margins and remove the distributors I would be required to learn SEO and buy ads, which I have zero willingness to do.

Growth Opportunity

I have invested nothing on marketing and growth, if you are skilled on those areas you have a lever to implement them by yourself and remove the distributor (and take their cut of the margin).
